Making the right decisions about winning college scholarships should not be avoided or delayed. Summer is a great time to begin or continue your "treasure hunt."

Driving to the beach. Visiting the park for an enjoyable picnic. Seeing a baseball game. Calling on the local fishing hole. These are great summertime activities. Other pursuits include painting, cutting the grass and washing and waxing the car. We look forward to all of them with great anticipation. When the weather gets warm (no doubt about it), thoughts and actions turn to outdoor events.

One activity that gets forgotten by many college-bound students and their families is the inside expedition of hunting for college scholarships, searching for huge scholarship dollars, initiating the quest for money that will significantly reduce or eliminate college debt. This happens for four reasons. First, it is easy to forget because summer is now and scholarships are in the future, the distant future. Second, my child is not smart enough to win a scholarship. So, why bother thinking about it now or ever. A third possibility: our student has no desire to goto college. Fourth, our family income is too high. These areall relevant ideas. But, they are all bogus. Here’s why. Summer is the best time to begin scholarship activities because there is no rush to get the job done. One can take time to do everything leisurely and thoroughly. Rushing creates anxiety and anxiety creates mistakes. The old maxim"slow and sure wins the race" also applies to going after scholarships.

Some students are slow in developing. The first two years produce mediocre outcomes, while the junior and senior years produce above average results. And, know this, scholarship committees often regard the last two years as more important than the first two!

Got a seventeen year old that has no intention of getting a post-high school education? Attention, attention, attention: a high percentage of these change their minds. Athletic Scholarships

Some countries like the United States highly value sporting talent. There are ample scholarships available for deserving sportspersons. Read on to know about the athletic scholarships offered.

Athletic scholarships are given to individuals who demonstrate exceptional ability in sports. This is fairly common in the United States. Many talented sportspersons avail of them. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that getting the scholarship is going to be a cakewalk. There is fierce competition for athletic scholarships.

Academic records are also considered while granting an athletic scholarship. Your GPA and SAT score will be taken into account. Make sure you start early ‘as the early bird catches the worm’. You should draw up a list of colleges, which meet both your academic and sporting requirements. You can divide your colleges into three categories- dream colleges, which are the elite colleges, good colleges where you have a realistic chance of getting into and back up colleges, which is your last resort. You should have patience as all coaches may not respond immediately because they may be tied up with busy schedules or have many applications to go through. It is your responsibility to make regular follow ups with the coach. Perseverance and patience will mostly reap rewards. There exist different college sports recruiting services, which you can use.

The first step to get a scholarship is to register with the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) eligibility center. You can fill up a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This estimates your financial need and eligibility for offered grants and scholarships. This is later sent to the financial aid office of the college you are attending so that they can calculate an offer of student aid.

The NCAA groups colleges into three divisions- Division I, Division II and Division III. Only Division I and Division II schools offer athletic scholarships. You should make yourself familiar with the eligibility criteria of different colleges. Requirements differ in different colleges. Make sure you go through the literature. Finally it is the college, which gives scholarship not the NCAA. If you have heard of a particular scholarship and don’t know its requirement write a letter directly to the college. You can go through the Internet and read books to get the required information. Although Division III schools do not give athletic scholarships they can aid you to find other sources of scholarships. If you do not get scholarships for elite sports you can try getting it for other sports with diverse profiles. If you have an outstanding profile colleges will clamor to enroll you. Getting the scholarship is not enough. You need to meet the academic and sporting standards throughout the duration of the scholarship. You need to play the sport in the off-season also. You have to keep yourself fit and injury free.

History of Soccer

The History of Soccer dates back to a long time, but gains momentum from 1863. The Soccer balls, skills and drills are mentioned.

Since many years soccer has been a passion for many. South American Indians were conversant with a light elasticized ball. In early times, balls were made of stitched up cloth, animal and human skulls, pig or cow bladders or human heads. In the Ts’in and Han Dynasties, animal skin balls were used. As per pre-medieval legend, a whole village would kick a skull to a closeby village square. This village would try to kick it back to the first village square.

History of soccer

In 1863 at England, rugby football and association football took different roads. The Football Association in England was formed at this juncture. Eight years after the foundation, this association had 50 member clubs. In the same year, the FA Cup, the first football competition in the world, was started. After 17 years, the League Championship was begun. While football was not heard in Europe, international matches were held in Great Britain. The first of these was between England and Scotland in 1872. John Love and Fergus Suter were two Darwin players who were the first to receive money for the football aptitude. After the English Football Association, the Scottish FA in 1873, the FA of Wales in 1875 and the Irish FA in 1880 followed. Due to the British, soccer spread quickly to other regions of the world. Football associations were formed in the Netherlands and Denmark in 1889, New Zealand in 1891, Argentina in 1893, Chile in 1895, Switzerland, Belgium in 1895, Italy in 1898, Germany and Uruguay in 1900, Hungary in 1901 and Finland in 1907. The FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) was founded in Paris in May 1904. It had seven founder members : Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland. The German Football Federation also declared its aim to join FIFA on the same day. In 1912, 21 national associations were linked to the FIFA. In 1925, this number was 36. In 1930, when the number was 41, the first World Cup was held. In 1938, this number rose to 51. By 1950, the members increased to 73. After the 2000 Ordinary FIFA Congress, there were 204 members from various parts of the world.

Soccer ball

The soccer ball is an air-filled sphere covered in leather or other suitable material. The circumference is 68-70 cm or 27-28 inches. The weight is 410-450 gram or 14-16 ounces. The ball is inflated to a pressure of 60-110 kPa or 8.5-15.6 psi. Size 3 is meant for team handball. Size 5 is the standard ball. Modern footballs are made from 32 panels of waterproofed leather or plastic. There are 20 regular hexagons and 12 regular pentagons. The 32-panel configuration resembles the truncated icosahedron. The difference is that it is spherical as the faces bulge due to the air pressure. The official FIFA World Cup held in Germany in 2006 had the 14-panel Adidas + Teamgeist football. This is a thermally bonded machine-pressed ball. For the World Cups in the future, FIFA aims at alternating between Nike and Adidas for match balls.

Soccer skills

There are two types of kicks. During Ground kicks, if the supporting foot is in line with the ball, power is achieved if the kick is kept low. If it is placed just behind, a rising or lofted ball is produced. The other type is Volley. Ball control comprises of receiving and trapping. The former means redirecting the ball into space. It becomes possible to shoot or dribble without being stationary. The latter is stopping the ball right near the feet. Heading is of different types like Standard header, Diving header, Glancing header and Flick header. The inside, outside, instep and sole of the foot are used for Dribbling. The different methods of tackling are Block tackle, Poke tackle and Slide tackle. The skills of goalkeeping are Rolling ball pickup, Grounding the ball, Diving for air shots and Crosses.

How To Avoid Soccer Injuries

Although the game of soccer can be very physical, there are two important ways in which an injury on the soccer pitch can be avoided. Find out how to keep your son or daughter healthy during a soccer match.

Here are tips that can help you protect your kids from injury during the game of soccer

Soccer is a physical game that can subject players to potential injuries, some of which can be quite serious. Although physical contact between players is not a planned part of the game of soccer, the inevitable clashes during a match are as much a part of the game as controlling the ball.

From a spectator’s standpoint, soccer does not seem like a physically brutal event, especially the way some players glide across the pitch like gazelles in the open range. Sometimes soccer players merely glance off each other in ballet fashion. But, for anyone who has been out on the soccer pitch in competition, the likelihood of getting hurt is ever present and there is probably not one soccer player out there who hasn’t hit the ground or bounced off of an opponent or has had cuts and bruises.

These minor incidents pose no real threat to a soccer player’s physical well-being. As all soccer parents can attest, physical contact while playing soccer is unavoidable. The obvious question, then, is - how do we keep the unavoidable contact from causing more than a few aches and pains?

There are actually two facets that come into play when considering the precautions that can be taken to keep your youth soccer player from getting seriously hurt. The one and oft thought primary consideration, of course, is soccer shin guards, the only real physical protection that a soccer player wears. Besides shin guards, a soccer player’s body is virtually unprotected. And that vulnerability to injury is what makes the second consideration of paramount importance.

Soccer kids need to be taught how to think about avoiding injuries as part of the game. It is the mental attitude and knowledge of a player’s own ability to anticipate potentially harmful situations and take actions to avoid them that can make the difference between being able to get up off the pitch and play on or get carried off.

Too often youth soccer coaches, in their zeal to compose a winning team, will spend too little time on safety. Safe play can be reinforced with pre-game and post game examples of what happens when certain actions are taken and what can be done differently to achieve a safer outcome the next time a similar situation presents itself. And kids need to understand that danger can come from not only their own actions, but that of the other soccer players on the pitch. They need to know how to avoid a charging opponent, while still maintaining control of the ball.

The key is to teach your kids an awareness of the safety aspects of the game of soccer. Then parents need not fear for their kids’ safety on the soccer field when they are properly trained. Kids already have an inherent sense for avoiding harm and parents just need to make sure that their kids keep this sense sharp and how to apply it in any given situation.

The bottom line is - no potential glory on the soccer pitch is worth sacrificing the body for. There will be another day and another glory when good judgment is used.

It’s Just Like Playing for Brazil, Says Rooney

"It’s just like watching Brazil" is a tongue-in-cheek chant that often reverberates around football stadiums to much amusement, but there would be no need for Manchester United fans to suppress smiles when singing the words. No one was laughing when Wayne Rooney, emboldened by a mesmerizing United performance that included everything from audacious backheels to outrageous nutmegs, drew comparisons with football’s favorite country afterwards.

"Growing up, I used to love watching Brazil and I think the football we play is similar to the way Brazil play," said the England international. "It’s an honor to play in this team and I love it." Rooney is not prone to hyperbole and there was no reason to suspect the striker was losing his senses in the wake of an exhilarating display that will be greeted with a sense of foreboding in Rome. United arrive in the Italian capital this morning and could not be in better form.

So impressed was Martin O’Neill that the Aston Villa manager suggested his younger players watch a DVD of the thrashing to learn from Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. Neither would look out of place in a Brazil shirt and, on this evidence, the same can be said for a number of Sir Alex Ferguson’s players. For the 11th time this season United scored four or more goals, a statistic that says everything about the freeflowing style Ferguson has imbued in his team.

So irresistible were United that Luciano Spalletti, the Roma manager, would be better off ignoring the scouting report from this 11th straight league win over Villa lest his players struggle to sleep ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg in the Stadio Olimpico tomorrow night.

"R and R" is supposed to be associated with rest and relaxation but there will be none of that for the Italian defence with Rooney and Ronaldo in this mood.

"Ronaldo has gone on to be exceptional," said O’Neill who, ominously for Roma, claimed that United are a "better side" than last season. "His goals are obviously giving him great confidence. He’s going on to the field with much more confidence and so is Rooney. I genuinely believe Rooney is one of those players who wouldn’t worry - need to worry - about scoring for four or five weeks. He’s got the capabilities, he’s got the game [and] it’s only a matter of time."

Rooney admitted as much afterwards although the celebration that greeted his first goal, when he sashayed around Scott Carson following Ronaldo’s fortuitous backheel, carried more than a vestige of relief. It was the 22-year-old’s first goal at Old Trafford since October and he had no intention of waiting another five months for the next. Ronaldo’s reverse pass nutmegged Nigel Reo-Coker and Rooney, deceiving Carson, dragged a low shot inside the Villa goalkeeper’s near post.

Ronaldo’s brilliant improvised first goal, when he flicked the ball through Martin Laursen’s legs after hooking one foot behind the other, had Ferguson drooling - "It was only when I saw the replay I realized what he had done. The execution was absolutely brilliant, so full marks to him," said United’s manager. But there was no doubt that Rooney’s contribution provided the greatest fillip. "He is the kind of striker who could go on a run now and get goals in his next six or seven matches," added Ferguson.

He is certainly a player who benefits from support, something that was apparent during England’s midweek display in Paris, when the forward cut an isolated figure. The smile was back on his face here, however, as he combined with Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Ryan Giggs in a four-pronged attack that might easily have inflicted more misery on Villa. Rooney and Tevez, who headed home his 16th goal of the season, were profligate at times.

Villa departed Old Trafford battered and bruised - John Carew with a groin injury that threatens to further deplete an already stretched squad - and with their hopes of qualifying for the Intertoto Cup fading fast. Only two points have been taken from a possible 15 while the failure to keep a clean sheet since November continues to undermine their challenge for sixth place. Zat Knight, who has endured a torrid time recently, was dropped here but others are fortunate that O’Neill has so few options.

The Villa manager could, with some justification, cite the opportunity Shaun Maloney squandered three minutes before Rooney’s first as a turning point, but so dominant were United that it is difficult to believe a goal then would have done anything other than rouse Ferguson’s players. "They were terrific," enthused O’Neill. "They are playing fantastically and have great confidence within themselves. In terms of the Premiership, that was real great stuff." Just like watching Brazil, in fact.

Jairzinho vRonaldo

Like Ronaldo the Brazilian was most comfortable on the right but capable of playing across the forward line. Jairzinho scored 33 goals in 81 games for Brazil, at an average of 0.40 per game, while Ronaldo has 85 in 229 for United, at 0.37. The Portuguese is, though, unlikely to equal Jairzinho’s feat of scoring in every round of the World Cup finals, achieved in 1970.

Pele v Rooney

Pele, like Rooney, played off the main striker and both made their names aged 16. Rooney scored his first Premier League goal three days short of his 17th birthday, Pele scored on his debut for Brazil three months before his. But Rooney cannot compete with Pele’s statistics - the Brazilian scored 77 in 91 internationals, at 0.85. Rooney’s record for United is 74 in 180, at 0.41.

Romario v Tevez

Two pint-sized center-forwards, though the Argentinian Tevez is an inch taller at 5ft 7in, who use their low centre of gravity to great effect. Romario’s overall goalscoring record is, like Pele’s, open to debate but his record of 56 goals in 74 games, at 0.76 per game, for the full Brazil side is not questioned. Tevez’s 16 in 38 for United, at 0.42, is less impressive.

Basic Soccer Rules - Learn How to Play Soccer

In soccer we have two teams consisting of maximum eleven players each. You ought to have minimum seven players in each team.There can be one goalkeeper (he is a player who is supposed to prevent the football from entering the net) for each team. Only the goalkeeper wears gloves to use his hands to handle the ball. If a player violates a soccer rule, the referee shows him the yellow card also known as caution. If after getting a yellow card he again violates a soccer rule the referee shows the player a red card. A red card means he is banned from the game and the next game too.

At the professional level, the game is played on a field measuring 90-120 meters long by 45-90 meters wide. Minimum length requirements are more at the international level. Matches are of ninety minutes duration. The match is divided into two halves, with two fifteen minute extra time periods and a penalty kick ’shootout’ as necessary during matches where the scores are tied.

One must have definitely heard of ‘Offside’ in football. ‘Offside’ is a rule violation that occurs when a player is closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-to-last opposing player. Players cannot be declared offside if they are in their own half of the field or if they receive the ball from a throw in, corner kick, or goal kick. When a particular player is called offside, the opposing team is awarded an indirect free kick.

Possession is in force when the goalkeeper has at least one hand in contact with the ball and has control of the ball. No charging or touching the goalkeeper in the goal area is permitted. Kicking or attempting to kick the ball when the goalkeeper has a possession is prohibited. A penalty kick is a kick taken from 12 yards in front of the goal as a result of a contact foul or hand ball that occurs inside the penalty area. An obstruction is a foul in which a defensive player, instead of pursuing the ball, illegally uses their body to prevent an offensive player from playing it. A Corner kick is a direct free kick that is awarded when the defending team puts the ball over their end line. The offensive team takes a corner kick adjacent to the corner flag.

The basic items to wear includes a shirt, shorts, socks, footwear and adequate shin guards for the players. Players are not supposed wear or use anything that is dangerous to themselves or other players. Player cannot wear shoes with metal cleats. Shoes with rubber cleats, plastic cleats, or tennis type shoes are approved for use. Rubber-cleated football shoes may be used under the condition that the toe cleat is cut off. All players on a team except the goalkeeper must wear the same color jersey, with numbers. The goalkeeper wears a garment of a different color. The clothing must be easily distinguishable from that worn by the other players and the match officials. The referee must be informed of any change of the goalkeeper. At the end of the game the team, which scores the maximum goals wins the game.
